He Must Increase

I hated coming in second place. No matter the game or the challenge, I would do whatever it took to win. Vince Lombardi said, "There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game, and that's first place." This is what the world teaches, but God's Word calls us to something different. As I have grown, especially as a husband and father, I have learned that the Bible commands men to be in "second place." No one knew this better than John the Baptist. He was truly a giant of the faith and even Jesus said of him, "I tell you, among those born of women, none is greater than John." But John was humble and wanted Christ's name to be magnified. John said, "He must increase, but I must decrease."  As husbands and fathers who strive to glorify Christ, we must look to the example of John. We must decrease in our desires, in our preferences, and in our comforts. We must establish a home where Christ is honored and where there are no rivals. It's a high calling to be in "second place" and it is grounded in humility! The funny thing is that living a life of "decrease" leads to more joy, contentment, and love.
